Subject Matter Expertise
The science of knowing what you are looking at is where the evidence standard begins.
Aerial imagery can identify a lot. What it cannot do on its own is determine whether what it found meets the threshold that matters for the program doing the monitoring. That determination requires botanical knowledge -- someone who understands the difference between species, can assess whether a detection is credible in a given habitat context, and knows what the program's reporting standard actually requires.
MJV's scientific staff bring that depth of knowledge to the species that define monarch habitat across the migration range: the milkweed species that serve as host plants for monarch caterpillars, and the nectar plant communities that support adults through the migration corridor. Their work requires distinguishing among dozens of milkweed species and understanding how habitat quality, plant density, and phenology affect what a monitoring program should be looking for and documenting.
That expertise connects directly to how POLLi develops and refines its vegetation evidence workflows. Ground-truthing -- comparing what is identified in aerial imagery to what a field botanist would confirm on the ground -- requires someone with the scientific standing to make that call. MJV has contributed that expertise as part of their Innovation Partner relationship, helping to validate how POLLi's evidence documentation holds up against field observation.
Conservation Agreements
Monarch conservation agreements administered through the Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances framework require vegetation and habitat documentation that meets scientific and regulatory standards. The remote-sensing monitoring protocols that define what defensible aerial monitoring looks like for CCAA-aligned programs were developed in consultation with Monarch Joint Venture, USFWS, and Monarch CCAA staff. POLLi's evidence workflows are designed to support programs operating within that monitoring framework.
